Identifying Garage Door Spring Issues

Norcross Garage Door Repair

If you have a garage door that has ever stopped working, then you know how important each part is. This is true especially about the garage door springs. Unfortunately, there are certain issues that are relatively common with springs. Norcross Garage Doors wants you to know what to look for so you can avoid further damage, and our technicians will discuss how to identify garage door spring issues.

When it comes to identifying garage door spring issues, you first need to know how to tell your springs apart. Do you know if you are looking at torsion or extension springs? Extension springs expand and torsion springs turn, to start. Torsion springs tend to have longer lifespans than extension springs. Now, rest assured, if you would prefer to have a technician come out to diagnose any issues, this is actually highly recommended. We always recommend hiring a licensed and insured expert to handle garage door springs, because if you work on them without the proper experience, something can go wrong and it could lead to major damage or serious injury. It is one thing to simply look to see if a problem is visible, but it is not recommended to handle these parts yourself!

Now, let’s discuss ways to know something is not right with your garage door springs…

  • The garage door does not open when you use the automatic garage door opener. This could be problematic springs rather than the opener itself.
  • You notice there is a problem with the garage door’s balance, or lack thereof. How can you tell? If you close or open the garage door, but find that it is a challenge and takes extra physical effort, it could be a spring problem. Another sign of a spring issue is the garage door quickly dropping to the ground. Definitely call in an expert for this!
  • The garage door just won’t stay open when you lift it.
  • There is a split in the garage door spring. This is definitely an issue you are going to want resolved by a professional. This will easily throw the entire garage door out of sync so you need to have this taken care of. It also makes the garage door unsafe to use.
  • You can hear squeaking or grinding noises. This is not normal, and if you ever notice anything out of the ordinary, it is a wise idea to contact an expert.

You don’t want to have a crooked garage door or one that is unsafe to open and close. This is why if you notice any garage door spring issues, you should get in touch with an expert right away.
